No tears are shed, no music plays-the game provides no grand gesture to honor your demise. Your head falls to the ground and wobbles just for a moment before lying still. You step onto a claw trap, and it closes on your neck. Limbo is a hostile place, home to giant spiders that would feast upon you, and traps apparently scattered by the world's other denizens. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

The pint-sized hero, his bright blinking eyes shining from his blackened silhouette, trots ahead with the charming gangliness of a six-year-old. The background provides an illusion of depth, but its branches and bridges are out of focus, as if you are dreaming them into existence. This is your chance to absorb your surroundings. Video game logic demands you walk from left to right, jumping over obstacles as they appear, a simple task that needs little attention in the initial moments. You are a boy who wakes up in a lonely world made up only of black, white, and shades of gray. Limbo, the game, is special in that while it does not wholly depict that mysterious dimension as my mind did, it captures its essence. I imagined that to be in Limbo was to feel perpetually lost and unable to find the way, or to even know what your destination might be. This conversation with my grandmother introduced me to the idea of an otherworldly realm in which I pictured children wandering aimlessly through darkness and mist, denied the pleasure of communing with God. It is unknown whether there is a connection between Immortus' temporal Limbo and the greater number of other dimensions called Limbo."Nana, do little boys and girls go to heaven when they die?".The true nature of the multiple Space Phantoms as agents of Immortus was revealed in Avengers: Forever #8.An example would be the revelation that the "Synchro-Staff" devices employed by Immortus to guide the Avengers through the respective origins of both Mantis and the Vision were in fact Space Phantoms.

Furthermore, Space Phantoms have the ability to take other non-humanoid forms as well. That person would then be sent to a dimension called Limbo while he was in their guise. The Space Phantom had the power to take on the shape of another person. Throughout the years, the outlandish words and actions of various Space Phantom agents have all been orchestrated by Immortus in a continuous effort to create confusion among The Avengers, shepherding their activities for his own byzantine ends. Space Phantoms have traditionally serve as the pawns of Immortus, ruler of Limbo, who uses sophisticated technologies to ply them to his will (and no doubt stave off the Space Phantom-effect from affecting his own person). In fact, the identity of "Space Phantom" isn't that of an individual being but more of a generic term given to the transformative state wherein anyone lost for duration in that timeless nonplace can physically and mentally become one. At one time, The Space Phantom claimed to be a citizen of the planet Phantus as an elaborate hoax when truly he is a denizen of Limbo. Through subsequent appearances, this classic "extraterrestrial invader" origin has proven something of a falsehood. He was defeated when his power backfired, trying to duplicate Thor, sending him to Limbo. Taking the shape of several Avengers, he tried to sow dissent among their ranks. Upon debuting, The Space Phantom claimed he was a member of an unknown alien race, coming to Earth to defeat the Avengers as a means of testing if the planet could be invaded by his people. The being who would become the "Space Phantom", as with other members of his race, presumably entered Limbo and remained there too long.
